Dallas, TX · Buyer guide
A manual gate secures the driveway. An automatic gate is the one people actually keep closed. Here is what each costs in Dallas–Fort Worth and where the money goes.

| Factor | Automatic (operator) | Manual |
|---|---|---|
| Installed cost | $5,500–$12,000+ | $3,200–$6,500 |
| What drives the price | Operator, power run, loops, keypad, gate weight | Gate size, design and post footings |
| Power needed | 120V run to the gate, or solar for light-duty | None |
| Daily use | Opens from the car in seconds | Get out, unlatch, swing, re-latch |
| Actual security | Stays closed because it is effortless | Often left open for convenience |
| Access for guests | Keypad, intercom, app, delivery codes | Someone has to walk out |
| Maintenance | Annual check of operator, loops and hinges | Hinges and latch only |
| Power outage | Battery backup or manual release | Unaffected |
| Safety hardware | Photo eyes and reversing sensors required | Not applicable |
| Home value impression | Reads as a gated estate entry | Reads as a fence with a gate |
If the gate crosses a driveway you use every day, automate it — a manual driveway gate gets propped open within a month and stops being security at all. Keep it manual for side yards, service access, rear alley gates and driveways used occasionally. A good middle path: build the gate and posts now with an operator-rated frame and conduit in the ground, then add the operator later without redoing the gate.
Most residential automated gates land between $5,500 and $12,000 installed, depending on span, design, operator type and how far power has to be trenched. Estate gates with intercom and stone column tie-ins run higher.
Often yes. We check the frame for square, the hinges and posts for operator loads and the track condition on slide gates. If the gate is sound we retrofit an operator, safety photo eyes and keypad.
We spec battery backup on most installs, which gives dozens of cycles. Every operator also has a manual release so you can push the gate open by hand.
Swing gates are cheaper and quieter but need clear space to open and a level approach. Slide gates suit sloped driveways or short setbacks from the street, and cost more due to the track or cantilever hardware.
